HOMAGE À SIDIBÉ
I completed this project while living in Ivory Coast in 2017. It was inspired by the Malian photographer Malik Sidibé’s joyful documentation of post-independence Bamako. Ivory Coast has been experiencing a renaissance in recent years since emerging from civil war. I wanted to capture the character and sense of fashion of the Abidjanais (people living in the economic capital Abidjan). I approached people on the street, took their photo on the spot, and they got to choose which fabric they wanted as a backdrop to their portrait. I love photographing people and this project was no exception!
