Why documentary family photography?

What is documentary photography?

Documentary photography is a very established genre of photography. It basically aims to chronicle historical events, but also everyday life. I am passionate about documentary photography and dedicated two years to a master’s in this field. It feels very natural for me to take this approach to documenting families.

What does this mean for you?

It means no posing, no need for kids to be on best behaviour and no need to dress your best, or plan anything. You will have your very own photojournalist for the day! I will capture real life moments – mayhem, tenderness, fun, intimacy and everything in between.

You will have photos that are a true reminder of what it means to be part of your family at a particular moment in time. The photos will preserve that moment in time so that it can be remembered and treasured.

Why is this different from other kinds of family photography?

I naturally gravitated to photographing families in a documentary style and it is a growing genre in the UK. Families are realising they don’t have to smile for the camera or wear matching clothes for a photo shoot. They want unique photographs that document them in the places they love, doing the things they love, with the people they love.

The images will be unique to you. If you want to capture the spontaneous hugs and kisses, the random things that your kids do like cartwheeling across the kitchen or creating an obstacle course in the living room, and their distinctive mannerisms … you are in the right place!

What will it feel like to have photographer around?

We will chat beforehand, so we will get to know each other and you will know what to expect on the day. We can talk about where the session should take place. Typically, my clients will have the session at home or in a favourite outdoor location, such as a local park or playground. Shorter sessions may focus on a couple of activities, while longer sessions can simply unfold naturally as the day progresses.

Clients are often still in their pjs when I arrive and I can photograph the morning activities, including breakfast and getting ready for the day. There is no need to deviate from your normal routine.

My clients say that time flies and kids are very relaxed about having me around. While I won’t pose anyone during the shoot (although we can make time for a natural family group photo), I am not just a fly on the wall and will chat to you all and engage with the session activities.
